SOMERS, May 6 – This is the most talented team that Canton has fielded in the short seven-year history of its girls lacrosse program. The Warriors won their first eight games of the year and nine of its first 10 contests and came into Friday’s NCCC contest with Somers needed just one more victory in the league to capture its first-ever NCCC championship.
Canton will have to earn that pennant on another day.
Somers (10-2, 5-2 NCCC) outscored the Warriors 4-2 in the final 8:39 of regulation and won the game on an overtime goal from Marianne Dalessio with 2:17 left in the second overtime period to hand Canton its first league loss of the season, 12-11.
Canton (9-2, 6-1 NCCC) can still win its first NCCC championship on Tuesday by beating Ellington on the road. Gametime is 4 p.m. A loss to the Purple Knights would open the door for Somers to claim a share of the league title with a win over Ellington on Friday, May 13.
Canton had a two-goal lead after Kaelyn Oliver’s second goal of the day with 14:47 left in the game. But Somers scored the next three goals in a span of 2:51 on scores from Anna Conley, Dalessio and Danielle Hollister to take a 10-9 lead with 5:48 remaining.
The Warriors tied the game at 10-10 on a goal from Devon Daubert with 5:07 left but Somers took the lead, 11-10, on a goal from Ashlie Delsky with 3:19 left in the game. Canton forced overtime on a goal from Emma Charron with 5.3 seconds remaining.
Somers’ Madison Renaud had three of her team’s first four goals as the host Spartans had a 4-2 lead midway through the first half. But Canton responded with two goals from Grace Giancola and Charron to take their first lead of the game, 5-4. Somers’ Cassie Speight scored with 8.1 seconds left in the first half to tie the game at halftime.
Giancola finished with five goals and an assist for Canton while Charron had two goals and an assist. Canton goalie Amanda Gottlieb made 12 saves in net.
