SOMERS, May 5 – Senior pitcher Jake Schaetzel allowed just two hits and struck out seven to lead the Canton High High baseball team to a 1-0 decision over Somers in NCCC action on Thursday.
For Canton (7-4, 6-4 NCCC), it was their sixth win in the last seven games. It was also the first win of the season for Schaetzel (1-3) on the mound. Schaetzel went the distance and didn’t walk a batter.
Somers (4-8, 4-7 NCCC) did threaten in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, The Spartans had a runner on second base with two outs but Schaetzel got the hitter to fly out to outfielder Jack Mansur to end the threat. Canton is now 5-0 in one-run games this season.
In the seventh, Somers put runners on second and third base with two outs thanks to two errors. But Schaetzel coaxed a fly ball from Somers’ James Chaisson to Mansur in right field to secure the victory.
Canton scored its only run in the fifth inning. With one out, Mansur was hit by a pitch. He took second base on a passed ball. He moved to third base on an infield ground ball out by Trey VandeBogart for the second out of the inning. Schaetzel walked and Mansur later scored on a passed ball for the 1-0 lead.
Canton’s defense played well behind Schaetzel, committing just one error.

Schaetzel and Cole Marcuccio each had doubles for the Warriors, who return to the field on Monday to host Sport Medicine Science Academy at 4:15 p.m. at Bowdoin Field. A win will clinch a Class S tournament invitational for the Warriors.
Two non-league games washed out by rain were rescheduled. The Warriors will face Gilbert at Walker Field on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. It’s part of a run of five games in six days for the Warriors. Canton hosts Windsor Locks on Wednesday, Ellington on Thursday and East Windsor on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bowdoin Field.
The other rescheduled game is against Litchfield on May 19 on the road at 4 p.m.
