PLYMOUTH, June 14 – The Avon American Legion baseball team hasn’t skipped a beat. A majority of the team for Post 201 played on the Avon High team that advanced to the Class L semifinals for the first time since 1968.
Avon (4-0) has won their first four games, including a 6-5 Zone 1 victory over Terryville Tuesday night, throwing out the potential tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Avon had a 6-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning but Terryville rallied with three runs with two outs.
Trailing by two with runners on second and third base, Terryville’s Jared Kahn’s hard single to center field scored one run to cut the Avon lead to 6-5 and Jeff Dupaul tried to score from second base. But Avon’s Joe Suski threw out Dupaul at home to preserve the victory.
Terryville (1-2) led 2-1 when Avon scored four runs in the fourth inning to take command of the game. Two runs scored on wild pitches and two runs scored on errors. Suski led Post 201 by going 2-for-3 at the plate. Will Thramann had a single and an RBI while Sean Del Gallo, Justin Olson, Kyle Emery and Chris Jacobs had singles.
Emery pitched four innings to pick up the win while Brady Williamson picked up his second save in three days.
On Sunday, Avon swept a doubleheader from Southington at Buckingham Park – the new home field for Post 201 this season. Since the team was resurrected in 2009, the team had played at Avon Old Farms.
In game one, pitcher Justin Olson pitched seven strong innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven as Avon beat Southington, 3-1. Andrew Leduc was 3-for-3 with two RBI while Olson and Jeremy Zarwanski each had two hits.
Avon scored twice in the fifth inning to take the lead. They took the lead on a RBI single from Zarwanski, who took an extra base on the play. He moved to third on a single from LeDuc and gave Avon a 3-1 lead when he successfully stole home.
In game two, Avon prevailed 4-0 despite striking out 11 times. Will Thramann was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Emery, Jacobs and Suski had two hits each. Thramann and Suski each had RBI singles in the fourth to extend Avon’s lead to four runs. Pitchers Connor Harris and Williamson limited Southington to just four hits and walked just two.
Avon opened the 2016 American Legion season the day after graduation (Friday, June 10) with a dominating 14-5 win over Unionville. Post 201 had 13 hits led by Del Gallo, who was 4-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Williamson had two hits while Suski, Zarwanski and Thramann each had doubles.
