Avon’s Connor Harris pitched five strong innings but didn’t get a decision in Wednesday’s 5-3 loss to Terryville.
AVON, June 29 – Two costly errors led to four Terryville runs and Post 20 was able to snap Avon’s four-game winning streak with a 5-3 decision in American Legion baseball action Wednesday night at Buckingham Field. Avon (10-3, 10-3 Zone 1) gave up just one earned run in the game.
Terryville pitcher Connor Levins got the job done, going the distance. He pitched seven innings for Terryville (6-9, 6-9 Zone 1) and allowed just four hits. He didn’t strike out a single batter but gave up just one walk. Behind him, his Post 20 teammates made just one error.
Avon took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Ryan Ollestad doubled to center field and scored on Joe Suski’s RBI single to right field. Terryville tied the game in the fifth inning. John Grimes reached base on an error and scored later in the inning on a RBI single by Steve Carrier to center field.
Terryville took the lead in the sixth inning. Joe Kalosky singled to lead off the inning. With one out, Jake Torrence singled to right field and Kalosky gave Post 20 a 2-1 lead when he scored on John Grimes’ double to left field.
Avon gave Terryville an extra out when Zack Harnish reached on an error, allowing another run across the plate for a 3-1 lead. Terryville’s Steve Carrier popped out to the second baseman for the second out of the inning – it should have been the end of the inning.
Levins ripped a two-RBI double to right field to extend the Terryville lead to 5-1.
Avon tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Andrew Leduc was hit by a pitch and moved to second base after a one-out walk to Brady Williamson. With two outs, Leduc and Williamson scored on Ollestad’s two-RBI single to left field to cut the lead to two runs, 5-3. But that was as close as Avon could get.
It was just the third loss to Terryville since Avon resumed playing American Legion baseball in 2009. But it was the third win in the last four games for Terryville over Avon.
Avon starter Connor Harris allowed just four hits while striking out one and walking just one. Avon remains in first place in Zone 1 with a 10-3 record followed by Simsbury (11-5) and Bristol (8-4).
Post 201 returns to action Thursday night by hosting Winsted (6-8) at Buckingham Field at 5:45 p.m. and Avon concludes the week with a Zone 1 doubleheader at Simsbury beginning Saturday at 5 p.m. Winsted has won six of its last 10 games after beginning the season 0-4.
