Watertown slips past Crushers, 1-0

Baseball ImageWATERTOWN, June 9 – The Canton Crushers are getting some good pitching. They just need to start scoring some runs.

The Watertown Blaze remained undefeated with a 1-0 Tri-State League victory over the Crushers at Deland Field Thursday night. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Watertown’s Matt Calzone reached on an error and scored on a RBI single from Chris Ayer.

Watertown pitcher Dom Severino improved to 3-0 with a complete game decision. He allowed just four hits and struck out six. The Blaze defense turned four double plays to help Severino and catcher Matt Calzone also threw out a Canton runner trying to steal second base in the third inning.

Jim Spirito had two hits for Canton while Chris Van deBogart and Stockman had one hit each for the Crushers, now 0-5. Jake Bryant went the distance on the mound for Canton and pitched well in defeat.

It is the second one-run loss for the Crushers in a week. They also lost to Winsted, 1-0 on June 2.

Canton returns to the diamond Sunday when they host Tribury Twisters (2-4) at Bowdoin Field beginning at 5 p.m.
