AVON, July 8 – The Avon American Legion baseball team let an opportunity to clinch a state playoff berth and add to its lead in Zone 1 slip away in a 1-0 loss to Torrington Friday night at Buckingham Field.

The visiting P-38s scored one run in the second inning and made that stand up to win their fourth game of the season. Avon had six hits and left eight men on base. Post 201 had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning but couldn’t get a run home.

Avon (14-5, 14-5 Zone 1) can clinch their eighth straight state tournament berth with one more victory. Post 201 hosts Unionville (7-13) for a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. at Buckingham Field.

Avon is still a half game ahead of Bristol (16-7, 13-5 Zone 1) in the zone race. The zone champion gets a bye through the first two round of the state tournament. Avon and Bristol will play twice next week on Monday and Tuesday night at Muzzy Field in a two-game showdown that will likely decide the zone championship.

Torrington (4-17) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Clay Langer doubled with one out in the inning and moved to third base on an error. Langer scored from third base on an infield ground ball.

Avon didn’t string together any hits until the seventh inning. With one out, Kyle Emery singled to center field. He was replaced by pinch runner Joe Suski, who moved to third base on a single to right field from Brady Williamson. Ryan Ollestad struck out for the second out but Sean Del Gallo loaded the bases when he got on with a walk.

But Torrington hurler Jason Viniscko got Avon’s Will Thramann to ground out to second base to end the game and earn the complete game victory. Viniscko scattered six hits, walked two and struck out three.

Avon wasted a solid pitching performance from starter Justin Olson and Williamson. Olson pitched four innings and struck out six. He allowed just two hits. Williamson pitched three innings and didn’t allow a hit.

Del Gallo and Chris Jacobs were each 2-for-3 for Avon. Del Gallo extended his hitting streak to 16 games.

The win by the P-38s snapped a nine-game winning streak by Avon. Torrington’s last win over Avon came in the middle of the 2013 campaign.

Bristol split a doubleheader with Simsbury on Friday night at Memorial Field. Simsbury won the opener, the conclusion of a game suspended about a week ago, 7-4, in 10 innings. But Bristol won the second game, 12-0. Bristol hosts a doubleheader with Wolcott beginning Sunday at 11 a.m. at Muzzy Field.
