SOUTHINGTON, July 5 – The Avon American Legion baseball team scored two runs in the seventh inning to force extra innings and added another four runs in the ninth inning to beat Southington, 7-3 in nine innings Tuesday night at Fontana Field in Zone 1 action.

Will Thramann’s three-RBI double in the ninth inning put Post 201 ahead for good. Sean Del Gallo’s two-RBI single in the seventh tied the game.

The win leaves Avon in first place in Zone 1 with a 13-4 record, a half game up on Bristol (12-4), which beat Unionville, 3-0 on Tuesday. Simsbury is third with a 12-6 record.

Avon trailed by two runs, 3-1, going into the top of the seventh inning. Brady Williamson led off the inning by reaching on an error and Jack Stokesbury followed with a single. Both men moved one base thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Joe Suski.

Del Gallo, who has hit safely in 14 straight games, came up and ripped his only hit of the game – a two-RBI single to center field that tied the game at 3-3.

In the ninth inning, Avon rallied with two outs. Connor Harris and Suski reached base on consecutive Southington errors. Southington (9-9) committed six errors in the game, leading to five unearned runs.

Del Gallo walked to load the bases. Thramann came up and ripped a three-run double to center field to give Avon a commanding 6-3 lead. After a walk to Chris Jacobs, Andrew LeDuc singled to drive in another run and extend the lead to 7-3.

LeDuc was 2-for-5 for Avon while Thramann was 1-for-1 with his three-RBI double. Thramann reached base four times – he was hit three times.

Avon relievers Brady Williamson and Connor Harris pitched five strong innings, allowed just one run and four hits. Harris, now 5-0, pitched three innings and allowed just two hits to pick up the win.

Avon returns to the diamond on Wednesday when they travel to Walker Field in Winsted for a 5:30 p.m. contest against Post 43 (7-12). Avon hosts Torrington on Thursday at Buckingham Field.
