CROMWELL, Aug. 6 — In the third round of the 2016 Travelers Championship, Daniel Berger makes a brilliant run up the leaderboard posting an 8-under 62 to take a three-shot lead heading into Sunday. He has a three-shot lead over Russell Knox, Tyrone Van Aswegen and Russell Henley. Berger’s 62 was one shot shy of the course record set by Phil Mickelson (2001), Kirk Triplett (2000) and Dana Quigley (1982).
“I think I made a ton of putts, and that’s been a big key for me,” Berger said. “I’ve been putting really good the last couple months or so. It was just a great day, and I feel like the group really got off to a hot start on the back nine, and we just kind of carried it into the last hole.”
Berger earned his first PGA victory at the St. Jude Classic Memphis in mid-June, beating Mickelson and two other golfers by three strokes. He also began that Sunday with a three-stroke lead.
“I’ve just got to go have some fun,” Berger said. “For me it was only two tournaments ago, but really it was seven or eight weeks ago. Just going to do what I’ve been doing the last couple days and hopefully make a few putts, and that’s all I can do.”
