Ellington runners sweep in NCCC quad meet; Avon wins pair over Windsor

XC graphic boys DSC_8548SIMSBURY, Sept. 14 – The Ellington High cross country teams got the 2016 campaign off to a strong start with the boys and girls teams each winning three dual meets against Canton, Coventry and East Granby Wednesday at Stratton Brook Park in Simsbury.

In the boys race, four-time defending champion Ellington had four runners in the top 10 to sweep Canton, East Granby and Coventry. The closest meet was Ellington’s 23-34 decision over Coventry. Ellington’s David Clavet won the 3.1 mile race with more than 60 runners in 17:22.

Max Sparks led Canton (1-2) with a third place finish in 17:29. Ethan Porter (seventh) and Chris Milne (tenth) each finished in the top 10 for the Warriors.

In the girls race, Lia Guerette outran teammate Allison Hill to win the race in 14 seconds and lead Ellington to wins over Canton, Coventry and East Granby. Ellington (3-0) had five runners in the top 10. Canton, which has just eight girls on its team, had four girls in the top 10 including Emily Briggs (fourth place, 22:05), Abby Briggs (seventh), Belle Magna (ninth0 and Cameron McCauley (tenth place).

On Saturday, the Warriors return to action and will host the annual Stratton Brook Invitational.

Avon sweeps pair from Windsor
WINDSOR, Sept. 13 – Avon’s Zach Bortoff won to help the Avon High boys cross country team win their ninth straight dual meet with a 17-46 win over Windsor in CCC Central White action on Tuesday at Northwest Park. Bortoff won the 3.1 mile race in 17:52.

Avon had the top three finishers led by Bortoff, Jack Stokesbury and Jonathan Hernandez.

Avon (1-0, 1-0 CCC Central White) has won nine straight dual meets dating back to the 2014 season. A year ago, the Falcons were 5-0 in the CCC Central White and won the divisional championship.

The Avon High girls cross country team won their 14th straight dual meet with a 20-41 victory over Windsor in CCC Central White action. The Falcons, the two-time defending Class MM champions, haven’t lost a dual meet since late in 2014. Avon (1-0, 1-0 CCC Central White) is ranked No. 7 in the state coaches preseason cross country poll.

Avon will have the weekend off. The Falcons return to action Tuesday, Sept. 20, when they travel to Colt Park in Hartford to challenge Bulkeley.
