GRANBY, Sept. 13 – Canton’s Grace Giancola scored a pair of second half goals and had an assist but the Granby High field hockey team had enough firepower to beat the Warriors, 4-3, in a NCCC contest Tuesday afternoon in the season opening contest for both schools.
Early in the second half, the host Bears led 3-0 on two goals from Cheryl Latona and a goal from Abby McMillan. Canton’s responded virtually immediately when Giancola scored an unassisted goal less than a minute later to cut the lead to two goals.
Granby (1-0, 1-0 NCCC) extended their lead to 4-1 on a goal from McKenzie Pederson with 16:15 to go in the game. Canton (0-1, 0-1 NCCC) trimmed the lead to two on a goal from Elizabeth Raynor from Giancola with 12:46 remaining. Giancola’s second goal with 5:20 left in the game cut the lead to one.
Granby goalie Rory Conroy had 13 saves while Canton goalie Jessica Szczepanski made 23 stops in net.

Canton, which went to the Class S semifinals a year ago, hits the road for a game on Thursday at Bethel beginning at 4:15 p.m. With the merger of Enfield and Fermi High School and the departure of Enfield to the Central Connecticut Conference, Canton has eight non-conference games on their schedule including home-and-away series with Haddam-Killingworth and Southington. The Warriors will also play Farmington, Hall and Westbrook.
The game against Farmington will be under the lights at 6 p.m. at the turf field at the high school.

WETHERSFIELD, Sept. 13 – The Avon High girls field hockey team had six girls score goals as the Falcons dominated Wethersfield, 6-0 in a CCC contest on Tuesday. Sydney Walters, Hannah Deppe, Rachel Spivak, Julia Bertson, Lauren Jeandell and Sydney White each scored goals to lead the Falcons (1-1) to the victory. Goalie Ashley Clark have five saves in net to earn the shutout.
Avon (1-1, 0-0 CCC South) resumes their rivalry with Enfield on Thursday when they host the newly-merged Eagles at 3:45 p.m. Avon and Enfield were rivals in the NCCC for nearly 15 years. When Enfield and Fermi High in Enfield merged, Enfield took Fermi’s spot in the Central Connecticut Conference.
