Avon runners capture a pair of CCC Central White divisional crowns

CP canterbury a, graphicMANCHESTER, October 19 – The Avon High boys and girls cross country teams each captured the CCC Central White division championship for the second straight year on Wednesday with top 10 finishes at the Central Connecticut Conference championships at Wickham Park.

Both Falcon teams went 5-0 in the dual meet portion of the season and were each the top team in the CCC Central White division to capture the title. Teams earn one point for each dual meet win in the division and one point for each win over a divisional opponent.

The Avon girls, ranked No. 9 in the most recent state coaches poll, were led by Emily Foley, who was 15th overall in 21:15. Rachel Martin was 20th in 21:25 followed by Christina Martin in 33rd place in 21:56. All three earned All-Conference honors.

The Falcons finished sixth overall in the CCC behind No. 4 Glastonbury (52 points), which placed three runners in the top 10. The Tomahawks outdistanced No. 2 Tolland (121), Simsbury (151) and No. 11 E.O. Smith (161).

In the CCC Central White race, Avon had five runners in the top 10 to roll to a 27-65 win over Farmington.

The Avon boys finished eighth overall in the CCC race, led by Zach Bortoff, who was 20th with a time of 17:39. Jack Stokesbury (38, 18:12) and Jonathan Hernandez (44, 18:20) each finished in the top 50.

In the CCC Central White race, Avon had five of the top seven finishers with Bortoff, Stokesbury and Hernandez in the top three spots. Bortoff, Stokesbury, Hernandez, Jack Schmittlein and Andrew Mascoli each earned All-Conference honors. The Falcons easily outlasted Northwest Catholic, 19-50.
