Avon lets 7-run lead slip away but rallies to beat Enfield for fifth victory

Avon’s Brendan Dyer had three singles and three RBI as the Falcons beat Enfield on Saturday for their fifth win of the season.

ENFIELD, April 29 – The Avon High baseball team let a seven-run get away and committed four errors Saturday against Enfield High, allowing five unearned runs to score.

But the Falcons had 16 hits and scored four runs in the top of the fifth and three in the top of the seventh inning to pull away and earn a 14-10 Central Connecticut Conference win over the Eagles.

Avon (5-3) led 7-0 after a half inning only to see the Eagles (2-4) claw their way back into the contest with three runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 7-7.

The Falcons simply went back to work in the top of the fifth inning. Kyle Emery singled and Mile Borenstein was hit by a pitch. Justin Olson (2-2, 2 RBI) had a RBI double to give Avon the lead again, 8-7. With two outs in the inning, Jeremy Zarwanski was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Avon’s Chris Jacobs hit a hard shot that Enfield shortstop Jake Timme couldn’t handle. Two runs scored on the error for a three-run lead, 10-7. Kyle Zarwanski’s RBI single extended the Avon lead to 11-7.

Seven Avon players had multiple hits. Dyer was 3-for-5 with three RBI – all in the first inning. Jeremy Zarwanski (2-3, triple), Jacobs (2-5, double), Kyle Zarwanski (2-4, two RBI), Ryan Ollestad (2-5, two RBI), Will Boone (2-4, two RBI, double) and Olson each had two hits for Avon.

Avon took a 7-0 lead in the first inning. Dyer’s two-RBI single gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Boone had a two-RBI double in the inning. Dyer batted twice in the inning and his RBI single gave Avon a 7-0 lead.

The Falcons return to the diamond on Monday when they host arch-rival Farmington at Buckingham Park at 3:45 p.m.
