OLD LYME, April 22 – The Canton High girls lacrosse team was tested Saturday by Old Lyme.
The host Wildcats scored twice in the final four minutes to force overtime and then Sydney Cowell scored with 2:12 left in the second OT to lift Old Lyme to an 11-10 victory over Canton on Saturday.
The defending Class S champion Warriors (6-1) beat Old Lyme in last June’s Class S semifinals, 15-11, on the way to their first state championship in program history. Old Lyme’s win snapped Canton’s school-record 12-game winning streak that began late last season.
Trailing by two, the Wildcats (5-1) cut the lead to one when Cowell scored with 3:54 remaining. With 1:58 left in regulation, Old Lyme scored on a power play goal from Maggie Berger to tie the game at 10-10. Old Lyme goalie Hannah Guenther (12 saves) stopped a shot from Giancola in the final seconds of regulation and made another big save in the first three-minute OT session.
Giancola led all scorers with six goals and an assist. Abby Charron had two goals and an assist. The Warriors never led by more than two goals throughout the game. Canton goalie Courtney LaFave had 12 stops in net.

Giancola scored with 11:56 left in the game to give the Warriors a 9-7 lead but Old Lyme scored within 40 seconds on a goal by Cowell to cut the lead to one. The Warriors scored their final goal of the game with 6:48 left in the fourth quarter on a goal from Giancola.
It was the first tough test of the season for the Warriors. Canton outlasted NCCC rival Somers, 10-8, in the first week of the season and beat Granby earlier this week, 15-12.
