Avon girls top Farmington; move closer to second straight CCC Central White title

track graphic 2AVON, May 16 – The Avon High girls track and field team won nine individual events and two of three relays to move closer to their second straight Central Connecticut Conference Central White division title with a pair of victories on Tuesday for Senior Day.

Emily Foley and Hayley Douglea each won two individual events and Riley Abate lowered her own school record in the 100 meters as the Falcons beat Farmington, 98-48 and Bulkeley, 140-1. The Falcons concluded the regular season with a 6-1 record and 5-0 in CCC Central White.

Avon earned a point for every CCC Central White team they beat in the dual meet season. They can earn another point for each CCC Central White team they beat at the CCC Central championship meet next Tuesday, May 23, at Simsbury.

The Avon boys team (3-4, 3-2 CCC Central White) earned their first victories of the season with 108-38 win over Bulkeley and an 89-56 victory over Farmington. Zach Tilsch won three events for the Falcons, who picked up a forfeit win over Weaver-Hartford earlier this season.

In the girls meet, Abate set a new school record in the 100 meters with her time of 12.68, erasing the mark of 12.72 that she set at last year’s State Open championships.

Foley swept the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races, winning by eight and 11 seconds respectively. Hayley Dougela swept the hurdles races, outlasting Farmington’s Olivia D’Alessio by 0.16 of a second in the 100 hurdles and winning by nearly three seconds in the 300 hurdles.

Christine Oberhausen (400) and Sara Leavens (3,200) won individual events and had second places finishes, too. Molly Milligan won the triple jump, Hayley Moynahan beat Sasha Goldbatt on a tiebreaker to win the high jump while Olivia Hyun beat teammate Carly Carpino in the javelin. Audrey Worth won the pole vault.

In the boys competition, Tilsch had an outstanding afternoon, sweeping the 100 and 200 meters along with taking the shot put. He was second in the long jump as Avon (3-4, 3-2 CCC Central White) earned their first victories on the track this season. Three of the four losses suffered by the Falcons came at the hands of three defending state champions – Windsor (MM), Wetherfield (L) and Northwest Catholic (M).

Zach Bortoff (800), Matt Nyklicek (1,600), Mason Love (110 hurdles), Danny Rock (discus), Marek Cierniewski (javelin) and Andrew Mascoli (pole vault) each came up with individual victories.

The Falcons return to the track on Tuesday, May 23 for the CCC Central championship meet at Simsbury High.
