WEST HARTFORD, May 3 – Avon pitcher Will Boone allowed just four hits but the Northwest Catholic baseball team scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning to beat the Falcons, 3-2 in a Central Connecticut Conference contest on Wednesday.
The game was tied 1-1 in the fourth inning when Northwest Catholic’s Luke Fox reached on an error. Fox was called out on a fielder’s choice hit by Cory Lytle, who moved to second base on a single by Dave Hungerford. Lytle broke the tie, scoring from second base on another error on a ball hit by teammate Anthony Ceolin.
Hungerford moved to third base on the error and scored the game-winning run on a two-out, sacrifice fly from Richard Hansen to centerfield for a 3-2 lead.
Avon (7-4) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a triple from Justin Olson and a RBI single from Brendan Dyer. But NW Catholic came right back in the first inning. Dan Fitzsimmons walked and moved to second base on Fox’s single. Fitzsimmons stole third and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
Fox scattered five hits and struck out seven Avon batters to earn the win. For the Falcons, Will Boone went the distance on the mound, giving up just four hits, fanning four and allowing four walks.
Olson led Avon at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple. Dyer was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Falcons return to the field on Thursday when they host Glastonbury High. It’s the final game of a seven-game in nine day stretch. The Falcons are 4-2 in the first six games of the run.

Gilbert 13, Canton 2
CANTON, May 3 – Gilbert’s Ryan Sholtis got it done at the plate and on the mound. Sholtis went the distance in Wednesday’s non-league victory over Canton, pitching seven innings, scattering six hits and striking out eight in a 13-2 rout.
At the plate, Sholtis was 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles as the Yellowjackets (4-7) snapped a five-game losing streak with a season-high 13 runs. Teammate Kevin Sullivan was 2-for-5 with four RBI and a double.
Gilbert led 3-0 after three innings but exploded with five runs in the next three innings to build six-run leads. The Yellowjackets led by scores of 6-0, 7-1 and 8-2 before scoring another five runs in the seventh inning to ice the contest.
Ryan Enns was 2-for-2 for Canton (5-5, 5-4 NCCC) while Jack Mansur was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Hurler James Mattson lasted four innings on the mound and took the loss.
Canton returns to action on Thursday traveling to Granby for a 4 p.m. before closing out the week on Saturday by hosting University/Classical at 11 a.m. at Bowdoin Field.
