Avon rallies to pull away from Unionville

Andrew LeDuc had a two-run single in a four-run inning for Post 201 in the second inning Tuesday night.

AVON, June 20 – After the Unionville American Legion baseball team erased a two-run deficit and tied Tuesday’s Zone 1 game, Avon scored runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to pull away from Post 72 for a 6-4 victory.

Avon (8-1) remains in first place in the zone with the victory. Chris Jacobs (2-0) pitched four innings and struck four to earn his second win of the season. Reliever Brady Williamson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Justin Olsen’s fielder’s choice with one out and the bases loaded put Avon ahead for good, 5-4. In the fifth, Avon’s Will Thramann singled to left field, moved to second on a balk and took third base on a passed ball. He added another insurance run on Adam Theriault’s RBI single.

Unionville (2-7) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a Muhil Saravana two-RBI single with two outs in the inning. But Avon bounced back quickly in the bottom of the second inning.

Thramann (2-4) singled and moved to third base on Adam Theriault’s double. Both scored to tie the game on Andrew LeDuc’s two-RBI single. Williamson followed with a single and Sam Leopold laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to move both runners to second and third base. LeDuc and Leopold scored a two-RBI double from Joe Suski (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and a 4-2 lead.

Unionville tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth inning. Dante Colagiovanni singled and moved to second base on Danny Lester’s single. Colagiovanni stole third base and scored on a throwing error by catcher Jeremy Zarwanski. Joe Nadel’s RBI double to tie the game.

It was Avon’s fourth straight win over Unionville. Since Post 201 relaunched the team in 2009, Avon leads the overall series with Unionville by a 20-6 margin.

Avon returns to action on Thursday night when they host Torrington at Buckingham Field beginning at 5:45 p.m.
