With fifth shutout win, Avon Legion tops Torrington for ninth victory

Avon’s Joe Suski had a two-run double in the second inning to put Post 201 ahead for good in Thursday’s Zone 1 victory over Torrington at Buckingham.

AVON, June 22 – Pitchers Jake Coppen and Brady Williamson combined to allow six hits and strike out five as the Avon American Legion baseball team won by shutout for the fifth time this season with a 3-0 Zone 1 win over Torrington at Buckingham Field Thursday.

Coppen pitched five innings, allowed four hits and struck out four to earn his first victory of the season. Williamson pitched two scoreless innings to earn his third save of the campaign for Post 201, who improve to 9-1.

Justin Olson led Avon at the plate with a pair of doubles while Chris Jacobs was 2-for-2 with one RBI.

Avon (9-1, 9-1 Zone) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Jacobs reached with a single to left field. With two outs, Kyle Emery singled and Joe Suski followed with a two-run double to left field to bring both runs home.

Post 201 extended the lead in the third inning. Olson doubled to right field and Will Thramann was hit by a pitch. After a sacrifice from Adam Theriault moved both runners up one base, Olson scored on a two-out RBI single to left field by Jacobs for a 3-0 lead.

Garrett Fosbrook and Connor Ryle were each 2-for-3 for the visiting P-38s, now 2-9 overall and in the zone.

It’s the third time since 2013 that Avon has gotten off to a strong 9-1 start. Avon was also 9-1 in 2014 and 2013. They were 8-2 after 10 games a year ago and also in 2012. Avon has won 10 of the last 11 games against Torrington.

Avon travels to Simsbury (4-4-1) on Friday night to face rival Post 84 at 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Field.
