CANTON, July 18 – Mike Odenwaelder’s two-run home run in the eighth inning snapped a scoreless tie and lifted the Litchfield Cowboys baseball team to a 3-0 win over the Canton Crushers in eight innings Tuesday night in Tri-State League play at Bowdoin Field.
Canton hurler Jake Bryant was excellent through seven innings. He allowed just three hits and struck out five. But he ran into some trouble in the eighth inning by allowing a leadoff walk and a big home run by Odenwaelder into a tree in left field. An RBI single from Dan Hedden extended the lead to 3-0.
Canton (5-13) had two hits from Jon Scippa and Mike Zammett. Canton’s best chance to score came in the fifth inning. With one out, Chris Van deBogart reached on a fielder’s choice. He moved to third on Scippa’s single. But Litchfield pitcher Justin Binkowski got catcher Jeff Mulhall to fly out to left field to end the threat.
Binkowski allowed just two hits and struck out four to secure the win for Litchfield, now 9-8.
Canton closes out the 2017 campaign – and their fourth year in the Tri-State League – by hosting Wolcott (8-8) on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Bowdoin Field. A win for the Crushers would set a new single season win mark for the team.
