SOUTH WINDSOR, Aug. 4 – It took several days to complete but the Glastonbury Arrows have finally grabbed their first Connecticut Collegiate Baseball League championship.
The Arrows swept the best-of-3 championship series with a 4-2 victory in 10 innings over the Manchester Mavericks on Friday night at Rotary Field. Game two began on Tuesday night and was delayed several days by evening thunderstorms.
It was Glastonbury’s third trip in four years to the CCBL championship series. They were swept by Southington in 2014 and 2015
The Arrows (16-9) trailed Manchester, 2-0 on Tuesday night when game two was suspended in the fifth inning by rain. It resumed Friday night. Glastonbury sent the game into extra innings with back-to-back RBI singles from Justin Perez and Arno Utegg in the seventh inning.
Glastonbury won it in the tenth. Tyler Mulberry led off the inning with a single and scored on a RBI double from Brandon Russo. The Arrows added an insurance run on a RBI double from Ryan Bagdasarian.
Peter Delalio secured the win with the save in the bottom of the tenth inning. Pitcher Zac Harrington picked up the win – his second of the championship series.
In game one of the finals, three Glastonbury pitchers combined to pitch a no-hitter in a 4-1 victory. Seamus Keenan, Harrington and Delalio combined to shut down Manchester. Aidan Scott had two RBI for Glastonbury in the win.
Manchester (14-13) was making its first finals appearance since losing to West Hartford in 2013.
The Mavericks upset regular season champion West Hartford in the tournament semifinals, beating the Thunder, 2-1 in a best-of-three series. Marcus Fry had a two-out, two-RBI double to lead the Mavericks to a 2-0 victory in game three.
