Coventry co-op team quickly pulls away from Canton to remain undefeated

CANTON, Sept. 23 – The Canton High football team had too many mistakes Saturday afternoon and the visiting Patriots from the Coventry, Windham Tech, Bolton and Lyman Memorial co-op team took advantage of all of them in a 58-22 Pequot Conference victory.

Coventry’s Nick Provonost, Devin Slead and Shawn O’Connell each scored two touchdowns for the undefeated Patriots (3-0, 2-0 Pequot Uncas). Jordan Smith had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the first play of the game for Coventry. A Canton fumble and a fumble after a punt return helped Coventry built a 47-0 lead in the second quarter.

Quarterback Caleb McKane completed 5-of-13 passes for 107 yards and a 58-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Macklin. Carter Gavin ran for a team-high 116 yards and a 69-yard touchdown for the Warriors (0-3, 0-2 Pequot Uncas), who tied a school record with their 23rd consecutive loss dating back to the final game of the 2014 season. McKane returned five kickoffs for 99 yards.

“This is a group of players that continues to fight and scratch to the final buzzer,” Canton head coach Dante Boffi said. “We are finding ways to build on their mistakes.

“Carter Gavin had a nice day running the ball and continues to be a steady player on both sides of the ball,” Boffi said. “Donovan Macklin had a long touchdown reception and played his butt off as usual. (Braydon) Fluckinger ran and blocked well at fullback. Gavin Wood had a solid game at tight end (2-22 receiving), blocked well and had a couple of catches.”

The Warriors return to the field on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host GIlbert/Northwestern at the high school.
