Canton, Avon field hockey teams advance with a pair of 2-0 shutouts

DEEP RIVER, Nov. 7 – Emily Gabrielian scored two goals to lead the No. 10 Canton High field hockey team to a 2-0 win over No. 7 Valley Regional-Deep River on Tuesday in the second round of the Class S tournament.

Goalie Jessica Szczepanski didn’t have to make a single save in net to earn her sixth shutout of the season. The Warriors (8-5-3-1) outshot Valley by a 12-0 margin as the Canton defense didn’t give up a shot on net.

Abby Charron had the assist on the first half goal with 5:02 remaining in the half and had a second assist on the second goal with 2:20 remaining in the half.

Canton, who has won three of their last four games, advances to face No. 2 Granby (15-1-1), the NCCC champion, in Thursday’s quarterfinal with the action beginning at 4 p.m.

Goalie Mia Cost made 10 saves in net for Valley, which finishes the season with a 9-4-3 record.

Avon 2, Joel Barlow 0
AVON, Nov. 7 – Jamie Rubenstein and Sarah Thomas scored as No. 6 Avon got back on the winning track with a 2-0 win over No. 11 Joel Barlow-Redding in the second round of Tuesday’s Class M tournament game.

The Falcons (9-4-1-3) went 1-4 in the final five games of the season with a pair of 1-0 overtime losses to Southington and South Windsor that counted as ties in earning points to qualify for the state tournament.

Avon advances to the Class M quarterfinals where they will face No. 3 Guilford (14-2-1) on Thursday night at 7 p.m. on the road.
