State title by Avon golfers recognized

The 2017 Avon High boys golf team was recognized for winning the state championship last June at halftime of Friday’s boys basketball game in Avon.

AVON, January 19 – In June, the Avon High boys golf team won their first state championship in 32 years with a slim three-stroke victory over New Canaan at the CIAC Division II championships at the Tallwood Country Club in Hebron.

On Friday night, the Falcons took a moment to bask in the spotlight and hear cheers they would never hear on the golf course. The golf team was recognized at halftime of the Avon and Farmington boys basketball game with their newly-updated state championship banner that will be put back up on the gymnasium wall in the coming days.

Six times in the previous seven years, Avon had finished among the top four in Division II including a second place finish behind New Canaan in 2010.

This time, it was different. Tyler Hahn shot a two-under-par 70 with four birdies, including one on the final hole to lead the Falcons. He finished tied for third place. Michael Hanratty finished tied for fifth with a 74 while Jake Avery was tied for tenth with a five-over 77, including a birdie on the final hole of his round. Sam Cuddeback shot a 78 and was tied for 12th while Peter Gerosa shot a 90.

Avon had a team score of 299 – its lowest 18-hole score in CIAC tournament play.

Two weeks later, Hahn finished second in the New England tournament.

A week before the state tournament, Avon (19-3-1)  won their first CCC championship by a single stroke over Wethersfield, 309-310, led by Hahn (74) and Avery (76).
