Canton High golf team ends season with another CIAC tournament bid

WATERTOWN, June 6 – Alexander Lederman had an 83 to lead the Canton High boys golf team at the recent Division IV championship tournament. Despite a rough dual meet season, the Warriors earned an invitation to the state tournament for the eighth time in the last 10 years.

All-NCCC selection Ian Witzgall shot an 86 for Canton at the Division IV championship as Canton finished 19th out of the field of 20 teams with a 406. Nathan Savino (135) and Tristan Witzgall (102) rounded out the top four for Canton.

Canton (3-10, 3-8 NCCC) was led by Ian Witzgall, who finished the season strong. He was medalist in four of his last five dual meets on three different courses. He had season-best 34 at Tower Ridge in Simsbury on May 25 against Granby.

Undefeated Suffield (14-0, 11-0 NCCC) won the NCCC championship going through the regular season without the loss and capturing the NCCC Tournament at Blackledge Country Club in Hebron. The Wildcats won the CIAC Division III championship as Austin Rupp shot a 5-under-par 67, tying an 18-hole school record at Suffield.

Granby was 13th at the Division III tournament led by Chase Skrubis with a 77. Noah Pockoski (83), Eric Cyr (91) and Zackary Bendig (98) rounded out the top four. Ellington was seventh at the Division III tournament.

At the Division IV tournament, Coventry (353) was the top NCCC team in ninth place followed by Somers (367, 12) and East Granby (399, 16). SMSA (413) was 20th.

Suffield was dominant in winning the NCCC Tournament for the third time in the last four years with five golfers among the top 10 in the tournament.

Canton was led by Ian Witzgal with an 81 with Lederman shooting an 88, Tristin Witzgall shooting a 93 and Nate Savino with a 133. Granby was led by Noah Pockoski with an 78. Chase Skrubis had an 83 with Eric Cyr shooting a 93. Mason Holt had a 81 to lead East Granby.
