CANTON, May 5 – The Coventry High softball team remained a half game out of first place in the North Central Connecticut Conference with a doubleheader sweep of Canton on Saturday.
The Patriots (12-1, 11-1 NCCC) beat Canton in the opener, 12-4, sparked by Delaney Harrington with two doubles. In game two, Coventry’s Julia Hassett was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles to lead the winners.
Coventry is a half game behind Granby (12-1, 11-0 NCCC), which has yet to lose in the NCCC. Granby handed Coventry their first loss of the season on Monday in a 4-2 victory.
Canton (3-8, 3-7 NCCC) received a home run from catcher Anna Mitchell in the first game. Katelynn Horvath was 2-for-3 with one RBI. In the second game, Emma Love had a single and double for the Warriors while Bailey Edgren and Lauren Eschenbrenner each had a single and a RBI.
Eight errors in the two contests allowed nine unearned Coventry runs to score.
Canton returns to the diamond on Monday when they host SMSA at 4 p.m. at the high school.
