Simsbury Legion produces in fifth inning to beat Wolcott, 6-0

Simsbury’s Nate Orluk had one of four hits in Wednesday’s shutout win over Wolcott in Zone 1 play.

SIMSBURY, June 20 – It took just one inning for the Simsbury American Legion baseball team to pick up their fourth Zone 1 win of the season Wednesday at Memorial Field.

Simsbury (8-0, 4-0 Zone 1) remained undefeated in the zone, scoring six runs in the fifth inning to earn a 6-0 win over Wolcott in Zone 1 action.

Post 84 had all four of their hits in the fifth inning as Wolcott (1-4, 1-4 Zone 1) committed two errors in the inning.

It was scoreless through 5½ innings. Simsbury’s Jake Nichols led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a walk and moved to third base following singles from Nate Orluk and a passed ball. Nichols scored on Mason Valentino’s RBI single to right field. Orluk scored on Luke Benneche’s RBI single to left field for a 2-0 lead.

Dylan Leonard’s sacrifice fly to center field drove in a third run and Sam Attianese’s RBI single to left field increased the Post 84 lead to 4-0. Attianese made it 5-0, scoring on a passed ball and Adam Wilson’s sacrifice fly gave Simsbury a 6-0 advantage.

On the mound for Simsbury were a pair of East Granby High graduates. Aidan Walsh got the start and pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits, striking out six and walking just four. Reliever Evan Depamphilis of East Granby and Westfield State College pitched 1 1/3 inning and didn’t allow a hit.

Simsbury returns to action on Thursday when they host Windsor in a non-zone contest at Memorial Field at 5:30 p.m.
