Avon continues march toward Zone 1 title with shutout win over Torrington

Avon’s Ryan Ollestad had one of Post 201’s six hits in Avon’s 6-0 Zone 1 win over Torrington on Sunday.

AVON, July 8 – Three Avon pitchers combined to limit the Torrington American Legion baseball team to just four hits and struck out 12 P-38s batters as Avon won their ninth straight Zone 1 contest with a 4-0 victory on Sunday at Buckingham Field.

Avon (13-3, 12-1 Zone 1) is now three victories away from clinching their third straight Zone 1 championship.

Simsbury (12-4, 8-4 Zone 1) and Bristol (10-4, 8-4) split a doubleheader this afternoon with Simsbury taking game one, 4-3 in 10 innings and Bristol winning game two, 7-4. Game one was suspended by darkness in the 10th inning in June.

Avon has a big doubleheader with Simsbury on Tuesday night at Buckingham Field in Avon. First, the June 13 contest between the two teams that was tied 0-0 after 10 innings will be resumed at 5 p.m. After the completion of that game, the regularly scheduled contest between the two rivals will continue.

On Sunday against Torrington, Justin Olson, Dylan Nastri and Chris Jacobs combined to strike out 12 Torrington hitters. Nastri struck out six in three innings of work. Olson struck out four in 2 1/3 innings on the mound. Jacobs fanned two.

Avon took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Miles Borenstein’s two-out, bases-loaded single to right field that drove in two runs. Post 201 added another run in the fifth inning. Jake Coppen doubled and moved to third base on a successful sacrifice bunt from Nastri. Coppen scored on a ground ball to second base from Jeremy Zarwanski.

Avon added a fourth run in the sixth inning. Will Boone reached on an error, stole second base and scored on Borenstein’s RBI single to center field.

Borenstein was 2-for-3 with three RBI for Avon. Olson, Ryan Ollestad, Adam Theriault and Zarwanski each had hits in the game for the winners.

JUNIOR LEGION
Bristol 9, Avon 3
BRISTOL, July 8 – Pitcher Anthony Marrotti gave up just six hits and struck out six to lead the Bristol Junior American Legion baseball team (17 and under) to a 9-3 Zone 1 win over Avon Sunday.

Bristol (15-3) remains in first place in Zone 1 while Avon slips to 9-9 on the year.

Max Raha was 3-for-4 for Avon, who had eight hits. Gage Doorman was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Sam Smith was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Blaise Engle also had a hit.

Doorman started on the mound for Avon and took the loss. He pitched four innings, giving up five hits and striking out two.
