Three Avon pitches give up three hits, strike out 11 in Zone 1 victory over Plainville

Avon’s Justin Olson had a double, single, a walk and scored two runs as Post 201 won their eighth straight Zone 1 game with a 4-1 win over Plainville Saturday.

PLAINVILLE, July 7 – Pitchers Connor Harris, Will Boone and Chris Jacobs combined to limit Plainville to just three hits and struck out 11 as the Avon American Legion baseball earned their eighth straight Zone 1 victory with a 4-1 win over Plainville on Saturday afternoon.

Avon (12-3-1, 11-1 Zone 1) maintained a 2½ game lead over Bristol (9-3, 7-3 Zone 1) and Simsbury (11-3, 7-3 Zone 1) in their quest for a third consecutive Zone 1 championship. Avon needs five wins in their final six regular season games to claim another Zone title.

Harris struck out seven and didn’t allow a hit in three innings of work as he improved to 5-1 on the season. Will Boone struck out four and allowed three hits.

Justin Olson had a double, single and two runs scored for Avon while Dylan Nastri had a double. Chris Jacobs and Ryan Ollestead also had singles for Post 201.

The win gives Avon a three-game sweep over Plainville, playing in Zone 1 for the first time.

Avon returns to the field on Sunday when they host Torrington at 3:30 p.m. at Buckingham Field.

NOTES: Jake Coppen and Connor Harris participated in American Legion’s Rawlings Showcase event on Thursday, July 5, at Central Connecticut State in New Britain. Scouts from many colleges and some professional teams had the opportunity to view some of the top players in the state.

JUNIOR LEGION
West Hartford 2, Avon 1 (8)
WEST HARTFORD, July 7 – Wes Pearce’s single in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs and the bases loaded lifted the West Hartford Junior American Legion baseball team (under 17) to a 2-1 win in eight innings over Avon in a Zone 1 contest. West Hartford tied the game in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI double from Liam Stone.

Pitcher Will Fox allowed just one hit and struck out two in the final two innings to earn the win on the mound for West Hartford (12-4).

Gage Doorman, Jackson Chard, Max Raha, Brayden Nemarich and Connor Galliher each had one hit for Avon (9-8).

Avon took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Raha reached base on a one-out single. He stole second base. With two outs, Doorman singled to left field to drive in the run.

Avon travels to Bristol on Sunday for a noon contest.
