WINSTED, July 1 – The Winsted American Legion baseball team has shown they aren’t afraid of the top teams in Zone 1. Two of Post 43’s last four victories came against Bristol.
But Avon pitcher Justin Olson struck out seven including Luke Green with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning as Avon won their seventh straight Zone 1 game with a 5-4 victory over Winsted at a sweltering Walker Field Sunday afternoon.
Avon (11-2, 10-1 Zone 1) had a three-run lead going into the seventh inning. But Olson walked two of the first three batters he faced and then Vincent Tancreti hit a double that drove in two runs to cut the Post 43 lead to just one run, 5-4.
Olson gave up another walk before getting a strikeout for the second out of the inning. But then he walked the bases loaded. Olson pitched 2 1/3 innings to get his second save of the season. Winsted slips to 6-5 overall and 6-4 in Zone 1. Post 43 is 4-2 in their last six games with a pair of losses to Avon.
Dylan Nastri earned his second win of the season on the mound for Avon, going four innings and striking out four. He also contributed with a pair of doubles, including an RBI double in the third inning. Ryan Ollestad added a RBI double in the sixth inning for a 5-2 lead.
The victory capped off a great weekend for Avon. Post 201 beat Bristol on Saturday afternoon at Muzzy Field by scoring two runs in the seventh inning for a 2-0 victory. Avon didn’t get a hit until the sixth inning. Connor Harris went the distance on the mound, striking out 10 for Avon.
Post 201 returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Sage Park in Berlin for a non-zone game against Berlin. Avon’s next Zone 1 contest is Saturday, July 7 when they travel to Plainville for an 11 a.m. contest. The next home game for Post 201 Sunday, July 8 when Avon hosts Torrington at 3:30 p.m. at Buckingham.
