Berlin handcuffs Avon offense for a 4-1 victory

The Avon American Legion baseball team dropped a 4-1 non-zone decision to Berlin on Tuesday night at Sage Park in Berlin.

BERLIN, July 3 – In recent years, there hasn’t been room in the schedule for the Avon American Legion baseball team to play non-zone contests. But with Terryville and Unionville dropping out of Zone 1 this season because they couldn’t field teams, there are some gaps in the schedule this summer.

With a week between Zone 1 contests, Post 201 kept sharp with a non-zone game with Berlin at Sage Park on Tuesday night.

Vince Dastoil had two hits and three Berlin pitchers combined to limit Avon to just six hits in a 4-1 non-zone victory. Avon hitters fanned seven times.

Dylan Nastri and Jeremy Zarwanski each had two hits for Avon (11-3, 10-1 Zone 1) while Connor Harris and Justin Olson each had singles.

Avon took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Olson led off the game with a single to center field, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Jake Coppen and scored on a RBI single from Dylan Nastri. Berlin responded in the first inning with a one-out RBI triple from Gianni Fanelli, who later scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 lead.

Avon had two runners on base with one out in the third inning but failed to score after a strikeout and a infield pop fly out.

Berlin (12-6, 9-4 Zone 7) added two more runs in the fifth inning for a 4-1 advantage. Camden Murphy singled and moved to second base on Mike Giore’s sacrifice bunt. Dan Veleas tried to put down a sacrifice bunt but reached on an error as one run scored. The second run scored on Ryan Hyde’s RBI single.

Will Boone pitched five innings for Avon, allowing five hits and striking out one. He took the loss.

Avon returns to Zone 1 play on Saturday when they travel to Plainville.
