Burlington shuts out Canton in Tri-State League action, 5-0

BURLINGTON, July 1 – Steven Caruso was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI to help the Burlington Hunters shutout the Canton Crushers, 5-0, Sunday in Tri-State League baseball action at Lewis Mills.

Ty Morin was two hits for the Hunters, who improved to 4-8 on the season. Alex Stagpole picked up the win on the mound for Burlington, giving up three hits and striking out 13 batters.

Canton (1-10), which has just seven hits and two runs scored in the last two games, was led by Chris VandeBogart with two singles. Jon Scippa and player-coach Tom Dubois each had a single.

Jake Bryant went the distance on the mound for the Crushers, allowing eight hits and striking out three.

The game was scheduled for nine innings but it was cut short by the oppressive heat and humidity on Sunday afternoon. The Crushers have dropped seven straight games.

Canton returns to action on Saturday when they host the Terryville Black Sox (8-3) at Bowdoin Field at 12:45 p.m. The Crushers will also play Sunday when they travel to Bristol Central (7-5) to face the Bristol Greeners at 1 p.m.
