SIMSBURY, June 25 – Sam Attianese had two hits and two RBI while Jake Nichols struck out five and earned the win on the mound as the undefeated Simsbury American Legion baseball team moved into first place in Zone 1 with a 12-2 victory over Torrington in five innings Monday night at Memorial Field.
Simsbury (9-0, 5-0 Zone 1) had six hits to beat the visiting P-38s for the second time this season to move into sole possession of first place in Zone 1.
Bristol (7-1, 5-1 Zone 1) slipped into third place after dropped their first game of the season in a 5-2 loss to Winsted as pitcher Jason Reola limited Bristol to five hits and struck out four. Vincent Tancreti had a two-RBI double for Winsted in the sixth inning as Post 43 took advantage of two Bristol errrors to score three runs and turn a one-run lead into a 5-1 advantage.
For Simsbury, Nichols pitched three innings to pick up the win, allowing just one hit. At the plate, he was 1-for-3 with a three-run double in the second inning to help Post 84 race out to a 3-0 lead. Simsbury stretched the lead to 7-0 after three innings and 9-1 after four.
Nate Orluk had a double and one RBI for Simsbury while Tate Valerio stole two bases.
Simsbury faces Avon (7-2, 6-1 Zone 1) tonight at 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Field. The two teams played 10 innings of scoreless baseball on June 13. That game will be finished on July 11.

Avon 5, Simsbury 4
AVON, June 25 – Brayden Nemarich scored from second base on a single to left field from teammate Gage Doorman in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Avon Junior American Legion baseball team (Under 17) to a 5-4 win over Simsbury on Monday night in Zone 1 action.
Nemarich led off the seventh with a walk and moved to second on Matt Leopold’s sacrifice bunt. Nemarich beat the throw home to score the game-winning run.
Leopold was 2-for-3 for Avon (5-4) while Blaise Engle was 2-for-2. Jackson Chard had a triple and two runs batted in for Avon. Pitcher Millian Jain picked up the win in relief, giving up just one hit in the final 2 2/3 innings of the game. Engle, Avon’s starting pitcher, went 4.1 innings.
Avon scored five runs on nine hits and won despite three errors. Simsbury (2-8) had just four hits. Avon hosts West Hartford on Wednesday at Buckingham Field at 5:30 p.m.
