Ellington dominates Avon in U-15 Legion state tournament

ELLINGTON, July 29 – Michael Wearne, Jr., was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in to lead the Ellington 15-and-under American Legion baseball team to an 11-0 win over Avon in five innings in Northern Division play in the 15-and-under state tournament Sunday.

It was Avon’s first loss in the tournament. Post 201 will now face Middletown in an elimination game on Tuesday at Buckingham Field. Avon beat Middletown, 4-0 on Saturday.

Ellington (23-4) dominated Avon on Sunday. Elllington had nine hits and had a 10-0 lead after three innings. Shawn Gentilcore and Matt Mateya each had doubles with Gentilcore driving in two runs and Mateya driving in three.

Jack Stead picked up the win for Ellington, pitching three innings and striking out three.

Tyler Nyberg, Colby Nemarich and Matt Leopold had hits for Avon (15-8) in the game.
