WEST HARTFORD, Sept. 17 – The Avon High girls cross country picked up their first dual meet victory of the season Monday in a hard-fought win over Conard, 24-34 at the West Hartford Reservoir. Avon (1-3, 1-3 CCC West) earned a split by falling to Southington, 25-31.
In the boys race, Avon (0-4, 0-4 CCC West) lost to Conard, 15-50 and dropped the meet against Southington by a score of 19-40.
In the girls race, Southington took three of the top four spots led by race winner Jackie Izzo in the 61-girl race to help them get past Avon. Conard had two runners in the top 10 but Avon had four to help the Falcons secure the win. Izzo ran the 3.1 mile course in 19:58 to win by 27 seconds.
Rhiannon Richmond led Avon with a fifth place finish in 21:17.71. Teammates Logan Jacobs (7, 21:54), Sarah Lancaster (8, 21:56) and Emma Buth (9, 21:59) each finished in the top 10 while Gabrielle Richmond (13, 22:48) was the fifth runner for the Falcons
In the boys race, Conard’s Gavin Sherry won the race in 16:13.93 for a 14-second victory. Conard had the first five runners across the line and seven of the top 10 in a race that featured 132 runners.
Avon was led by Anish Rajamanickam, who finished eleventh with a season-best time of 17:56.68. Jack Martin (13, 18:00) and Daniel Carvalho (14, 18:13) also finished in the top 20.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday when they travel to Farmington to compete in the Winding Trails Invitational.
