With a victory, Suffield girls end Canton’s winning streak at 21

SIMSBURY, September 20 – Sophomore Julia Caputo won her second race of the fall but Suffield had five runners finish among the top eight to hand the Canton High girls cross country team their first defeat in two years with a 23-32 victory.

The win snaps Canton’s dual meet winning streak at 21 matches. Suffield’s Emily Brydges, Gabby Zeller and Haley Young all finished in the top five to lift the undefeated Wildcats (5-0). Caputo won the race by 14 seconds in 20:37 over Brydges.

Helena Winkler finished fifth for the Warriors (3-1) with Jenna Cuniowski taking seventh, Maeve Balavender finishing ninth and Lila Hunt finishing tenth. Canton, the defending NCCC champion, beat Bolton, 15-40.

The Canton boys cross country team (2-2) was swept, dropping a 15-50 decision to undefeated Suffield (5-0) and a 16-47 decision to Bolton. Suffield had seven of the top 10 finishers in the race.

The Warriors return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Vernon to face NCCC rivals Rockville, East Windsor and Hartford Classical.
