Southington is No. 1 in state volleyball poll but Avon picks up a first place vote

SOUTHINGTON, Sept. 25 — Undefeated Southington (7-0) is remains the No. 1 ranked team in the latest top 10 state coaches girls volleyball poll. Southington is one of five teams to receive No. 1 votes including Avon.

Southington received the lion’s share of No. 1 votes with 19 and has a comfortable lead over No. 2 Woodstock Academy (7-0), who received six No. 1 votes and moved up one spot in the poll.

No. 6 Fairfield Ludlowe, No. 11 Westhill and No. 13 Avon also received one first place vote each. The Falcons (6-1) opened the season with five straight wins before dropping a 3-1 decision on Friday to Conard, 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-9.

Emily Dempsey had just six kills and 13 digs in the loss while Abby St. Onge had 22 assists. Noelle Power had 12 digs for the Falcons. Avon rebounded from that defeat with a dominating 3-0 win over Northwest Catholic on Wednesday, 25-11, 25-9, 25-11.

Abby St. Onge had 17 assists and five serving aces for Avon while teammate Emily Dempsey had 10 kills and four aces serving in the victory.

The Falcons return to action on Friday night when they travel to Bloomfield in CCC West action.
