Avon’s Paige Deppe, left, and Hall’s Elizabeth Pillow battle for the ball in a game earlier this season in Avon.
Undefeated Staples, which extended their winning streak to 22 consecutive games with a pair of victories in the FCIAC Tournament, is the No. 1 ranked team in the field hockey coaches top 10 poll. The Wreckers (18-0) will face No. 5 Darien (15-2-1) in the FCIAC title game on Thursday at Brien McMahon in Norwalk.
There was no change among the top 7 teams in the state with Granby, who finished the season at 15-1 and as the NCCC champion, at No. 3 and Hall-West Hartford at No. 4.
This is the final poll of the regular season. The next poll will be taken after the CIAC state tournaments that begin on Tuesday, November 5.
Championship games in the SWC, Shoreline Conference and ECC will also be played on Thursday. No. 6 Pomperaug (15-1-2) will face No. 7 Immaculate-Danbury (16-1-0-1) in the SWC title game with North Branford and Westbrook set to square off in the Shoreline Conference championship tilt. The SCC title game will be Saturday in Guilford.
The Central Connecticut Conference doesn’t host post-season tournaments for field hockey. Avon (12-3, 5-0 CCC South) can win their first-ever CCC South title in field hockey with a win over Southington (7-7-0-1) on Wednesday at Ethel Walker School in Simsbury beginning at 3:30 p.m. It is the final game of the regular season for both teams.
Hall (14-0-1, 5-0-1 CCC North) has already claimed a share of the league title. Enfield (11-1-2, 4-0-1 CCC North) can grab a share with a win over E.O. Smith in the regular season finale on Wednesday in Enfield.
