With third straight win, Canton girls earn berth in Class S tournament

CANTON, October 17 – Maddie Archangelo had two goals while four other players had one goal each as the Canton High girls soccer team earned a spot in the CIAC Class S tournament for just the second time since 2011 with a 6-0 shutout win Wednesday over Hartford Classical on the turf field.

With a third straight win, Canton improves to 7-6 with three games remaining to earn a berth in the Class S tournament. It’s Canton’s first tournament bid since 2014.

Leading scorer Chelsea Mitchell had a goal against Classical and has scored five goals in the last three games. Mitchell leads the Warriors with 10 goals in 13 games. Canton beat Bolton, 4-0 on Friday and rolled to a 7-2 win over East Windsor on Monday.

Mitchell, Paige Brown and Brooke Shepard scored for the Warriors in the win over Bolton. On Monday, Mitchell had two goals while Brown, Julie Langou, Lauren Almeida, Ashley Potter and Alison Celmer each had goals. Celmer had three assists in the game while Archangelo had two assists.

Goalie Julie Lau made four saves against Classical to earn her fifth shutout of the season.

Canton plays their final road game of the regular season when they travel to Windsor Locks on Friday for a night game beginning at 5 p.m.

The Warriors, under third-year coach Alex Uscilla, finish off the regular season by hosting East Granby under the lights on the turf field at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 23 and hosting Somers on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 4:15 p.m.
