Richmond leads Avon girls at State Open cross county meet

MANCHESTER, November 1 – Rhiannon Richmond finished 43rd as the Avon High girls cross country team got one additional chance to compete at Thursday’s State Open cross country championships at Wickham Park.

The Falcons finished third in last week’s Class MM championships behind Pomperaug and Tolland. The top two teams in each of the CIAC’s five divisions (LL, L, MM, M and S) earn automatic berths to the State Open along with the next best eight teams with the fastest total time. Avon earned that wild card invitation.

Avon finished 14th in the field of 20 teams. Logan Jacobs was 57th for the Falcons while Gabrielle Richmond (91, 22:17) also finished in the top 100.

Xavier won the boys State Open championship while Danbury nipped neighbor Immaculate by one point to win the girls State Open title. The meet was moved up one day due to Friday’s forecast for significant rain.
