AVON, December 22 – Seven Avon High athletes earned All-State honors for their performance on the field this fall.
Soccer player Ryan Bartkiewicz, hitter Emily Dempsey and field hockey players Megan Gilbey, Paige Deppe and Sarah Thomas earned All-State honors from the Connecticut High School Coaches Association along with runners Jack Martin and Rhiannon Richmond.
Deppe and Richmond earned All-State honors for the second straight season.
Bartkiewicz scored seven goals this season for the Avon boys soccer team (12-5-3) that advanced to the Class L semifinals before falling in a penalty kick shootout to Maloney, 11-10.
Martin, a freshman, earned All-State honors with a seventh place finish at the Class MM championship meet. Richmond, a junior, finished sixth in Class MM and helped her team take third as a team and qualify for the State Open for the fifth straight year.
Dempsey, a junior, led the Falcons (13-8) with 273 kills and was second in the team with 56 serving aces and 248 digs.
Deppe, Gilbey and Thomas helped the field hockey team (14-4, 7-0 CCC South) win their first league title since 2014. Avon advanced to the Class M semifinals before dropping a 1-0 decision in triple overtime to Sacred Heart Academy.
Deppe scored a team-leading 19 goals while Thomas scored 11. Gibley scored four.
