Thanks to hard-fought win over Farmington, Canton has won first four games

All-State guard Abby Charron had 10 points and eight assists as Canton beat Farmington for the first time in more than 30 years on Monday night.

CANTON, December 17 – The Canton High girls basketball team has won their first four games of the season with the most impressive win coming earlier this week on Monday with a 53-45 decision over Farmington, which played in last year’s Class L championship game.

The Warriors got plenty of playing time in victories over Stafford and Rockville. Canton beat the Bulldogs, 44-19 on Tuesday and outlasted Rockville last Friday night, 61-26.

“Each game provided its own challenge but in all three, we passed the test,” Canton High coach Brian Medeiros said. “It was great to get the girls a lot of playing time in the Rockville and Stafford games while the Farmington game was our most competitive game of the season (thus far.)”

Allison Celmer had 14 points while Lauren Eschenbrenner and Abby Charron had 10 points each as Canton beat Farmington for the first time in more than 30 years with a 53-45 decision Monday night.

Canton raced out to an early 13-4 lead and led 20-11 at one point only to see the Indians respond with a 10-0 surge to take the lead.

“We played a very good third quarter and the first couple minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 47-32 lead under five minutes to go,” Medeiros said. “Farmington made a run but luckily, we were able to hold on to win by six.”

Bowman had a strong game in the middle with seven points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. Celemer pulled down nine rebounds while Charron had eight assists and pulled in nine rebounds, too.

Farmington, which played in the Class L championship game a year ago, slipped to 0-4 despite 14 points from Emma Novajasky and 13 points from Daria Fournier.

It was just the fourth meeting between the two teams in this century. The programs renewed their rivalry last year with Farmington earning a one-point victory over the Warriors, 50-49. It is believed that Canton’s last win over the Indians was a 40-39 overtime win during the 1986-87 season.

On Tuesday night, Eschenbrenner had 11 points to lead Canton in a 44-19 victory. Charron had seven points, five assists and five steals for the Warriors.

In the win over Rockville, Walzak had a career-high 12 points while Bowman had seven rebounds and three blocks. Charron had seven steals, five assists and nine points. Allie DelSanton had five rebounds and a pair of steals for the Warriors. Canton led 25-5 after one period and 38-13 at halftime.

Canton’s final game before the holiday break is Friday night when the Warriors host Granby at the high school beginning at 6:45 p.m. The Warriors will return to action on December 27 when they host Suffield at the high school at 2 p.m.
