AVON, January 2 – The Avon High wrestling team is in position to contend for their first division title in the Central Connecticut Conference.
The Falcons are off to a 7-0 start including a 51-27 victory over three-time defending CCC North champion East Hartford. Avon took third in last week’s Frank Chaves Invitational behind defending New England champion Ponagansett, Rhode Island and No. 5 Simsbury.
On the first weekend of the season, the Falcons were second in the Plainville Invitational behind defending State Open champion Danbury.
“We have 14 seniors on the team so if we ever had a chance to win the conference (championship), it is this year,” Avon High coach John McLaughlin said. “(Winning a league title) is clearly a team goal.”
Not only are the Falcons loaded with experience, they return some decorated wrestlers. Senior Henry Schrecengost (285) won a CCC title a year ago and was third in Class L while junior Chris Gens (220) was fourth in Class L. Senior Abhi Bhabad was fifth in Class L at 106.
At the Chaves Invitational, Gens finished second, dropping a 7-5 decision to Luke Cirka of Ponagansett in the final. Schrecengost won at 285 pounds with a 6-3 victory over Newtown’s Joe Zeller. Bhabad, now at 120, finished fourth while senior Jack Colman (160) and senior Tyler Dickenson (195) each finished third.
“With 14 seniors, you have that leadership and that experience,” McLaughlin said. “The young kids see it. They’re learning that work ethic and they’re learning the moves. The seniors are great with the young kids.”

It won’t be easy in the CCC North. The Falcons have four matches remaining in the league beginning with a match at South Windsor on Thursday. Avon hosts Glastonbury on Wednesday, Jan. 9, travels to Wethersfield on Wednesday, Jan. 23 and closes out the conference season by hosting Manchester on Wednesday, Jan. 30.
Avon last won a league championship in 2015 in their final season in the North Central Connecticut Conference.
Along with the big win over East Hartford, the Falcons won their own Avon Duals last week with victories over Enfield, 66-15, and Canton, 57-22, in the championship round. Avon was 5-0 in the tournament.
Avon’s 7-0 start hasn’t gone unnoticed. The Falcons are ranked No. 10 in Connecticut Wrestling Online’s first top 10 wrestling poll of the season that was released Tuesday.
It’s the first appearance for Avon in the top 10 in the state poll in 13 years (December 2006) when they were ranked No. 6.
