After losing first game, Avon rebounds with a shutout win over Hornets

AVON, April 18 – Freshman pitcher Jackie Pengel gave up just two hits and struck out 16 as the Avon High softball team won their third game in four starts Thursday with a 3-0 CCC win over East Hartford at Fisher Meadows.

Elizabeth Jenger was 2-for-2 with one RBI as the Falcons improved to 3-1 on the season, rebounding from Wednesday’s 13-1 loss to Northwest Catholic.

Avon took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Gianna Vallee singled to right field. She moved to second base on a ground ball out from Pengel and took third base on a passed ball. Vallee scored on a RBI single from Jenger.

The Falcons extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning when Kaitlyn Hards tripled and scored on a ground ball out from Nicole Detora.

Avon scored their third run in the sixth inning when Kendra Hards scored from third base on a sacrifice from Detora. Pengel (3-0) walked just two Hornet batters.

It was Avon’s second shutout win of the season. The Falcons blanked Simsbury in the season opener, 4-0. The last time that the Falcons had two shutouts in a season was in 2006 when they had two.

On Wednesday, Avon dropped their first game of the season in a 13-1 loss to Northwest Catholic. The Lions had 13 hits and scored at least one run in each inning. Pitcher Samantha Scott got the job done on the mound, allowing six hits and striking out nine.

At the plate, Scott was 2-for-4 with three RBI while teammate Allie Tessman was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI.

Avon scored their lone run in the first inning when Pengel singled and scored on Amanda Hasler’s RBI double. Hassler was 2-for-2 with a double and triple for the Falcons.

Avon returns to action on Monday when they host Hartford Public at Fisher Meadows at 3:45 p.m.
