CANTON, April 18 –  The Canton High softball team played three games this week, winning their first contest on Tuesday with a one-run victory against Suffield on Tuesday before dropping back-to-back games to Ellington and Farmington.

Wednesday’s game against Ellington was another one-run affair but this time, it was Canton on the losing end of a 3-2 decision.

Canton pitcher Loren Mossey struck out 14 and allowed just four hits but the Purple Knights took advantage of a few key errors to earn the win.

The Warriors (2-3, 2-2 NCCC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. They loaded the bases when Anna Mitchell walked, Mossey and Gabbie Schinkel singled. With two outs, Mitchell stole home as Mossey stole third base to give the Warriors an early lead.

Ellington (6-1) tied the game in the third inning on Katelin Johndrow’s RBI single before pushing another two runs across thanks to a two-out error in the fourth inning to grab a 3-1 lead.

Canton cut the lead to one run in the fifth inning on Ainsley Hill’s two-out single that drove in Schinkel from third base. The Warriors had runners on first and second base in the bottom of the seventh inning but Ellington relief pitcher Emma Gorham got the strikeout to secure the win. Gorham pitched four innings in relief, scattering seven hits and striking out six.

Hill was 3-for-4 with one RBI for Canton while Emma Love was 2-for-4. Schinkel was 2-2. The Warriors had 10 hits but left nine runners on base.

On Thursday, Canton renewed a long-standing rivalry with Farmington (4-2) but were overmatched in a 15-0 loss in five innings.

Farmington pitchers Shelby Smith and Anna Mihalek combined to allow just two hits and strike out six. Milhalek and Bridget Stachen hit home runs for the Indians while Hanny Wolkoff had a triple.
