Mossey strikes out 15 as Canton softball tops East Windsor for season-opening win

CANTON, April 2 – Sophomore pitcher Loren Mossey struck out 15 batters as the Canton High girls softball team beat East Windsor, 10-6 in a North Central Connecticut Conference game on Tuesday.

The Warriors scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 5-5 tie and give head coach Kristy Benjamin the victory in her varsity coaching debut.

Tied at 5-5, Canton put two runners on base with walks in the bottom of the sixth. Madison Van Horn, Lauren Eschenbrenner, Emma Love and Katelyn Horvath each had consecutive RBI singles to put the Warriors ahead for good.

Horvath was 3-for-4 with two RBI for Canton (1-0, 1-0 NCCC) while Love was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Audrianna Mitchell had a three-run home run to right field in the first inning and finished with four RBI in the game.

Mossey went the distance on the mound, scattering five hits as she won her first game of the season. Canton returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Bolton.
