Canton girls remain undefeated with win over Suffield, Granby; Canton boys split

SUFFIELD, May 8 – Chelsea Mitchell won four individual events while Madeline Archangelo and Julia Caputo won two events each to help the undefeated Canton High girls track and field team outlast host Suffield by 5½ points, 77.75 to 72.25 in a dual meet featuring three of the top teams in the North Central Connecticut Conference.

With the win, Canton remains first in the league at 12-0 with Suffield at 11-1 and Granby at 10-2. The Bears lost their first two dual meets of the season with a 115.75 to 39.25 loss to Canton and a 114-41 defeat at the hands of Suffield. The Warriors also beat Innovation of New Britain, 129-18.

The victory gives the Warriors an edge going into the league championship meet at Coventry High on May 21. Teams earn one point for each NCCC dual meet victory they earn and one point for each team they beat at the league championship meet.

Canton (14-0, 12-0 NCCC) won their only league title in 2017 when they shared the league title with Suffield.

Mitchell swept the 100, 200 and 400 meters along with long jump while Archangelo won the javelin and 100 hurdles and took second in the triple jump. Caputo swept the 1,600 and 3,200 meter races. Julia Lau won the discus with Sarah Bowman finishing second. Kaylia Bailey (100) and Lila Hunt (800) picked up key second place finishes for Canton.

Canton set four school records in the victory. Mitchell set new school records in the 400 meters and long jump with Archangelo tying a school record in the high jump and Lau setting a new school record in the discus.

The Canton boys (11-3, 9-3 NCCC) beat Granby, 85½ to 65½ and Innovation, 111-38. But they lost to host Suffield, 80-70. The Wildcats is second in the league at 11-1 behind undefeated Ellington (12-0). Granby is 9-3 in the league.
