
The Avon American Legion baseball team made three errors and gave up three unearned runs in a 3-1 Zone 1 loss to West Hartford on Sunday.
WEST HARTFORD, June 30 – The Avon American Legion baseball team committed three errors and gave up three unearned runs in a 3-1 loss to West Hartford Sunday in Zone 1 action at Hall High. Post 201 has now lost four straight contests and five of the last six games.
Avon (4-10, 4-7 Zone 1) gave up just one hit but pitchers Ben Angus and reliever Billy Horrigan combined to walk six batters.
West Hartford (8-4, 8-4 Zone 1) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. A pair of walks and a runner reaching on an error loaded the bases and one run scored on Ryan Farley’s fielders choice.
In the third inning, West Hartford’s Colby Jones led off the inning by reaching on an error by Avon first baseman Nick Amatulli. After two walks from Angus and a sacrifice bunt, the bases were loaded for West Hartford.
William Fox reached on an error by Amatulli and two runs scored for a 3-0 lead.
Angus (1-3) went five innings for Avon, allowing just one hit – a single to Daniel Fitzsimmons – while striking out four and walking five.
West Hartford hurler Griffin Van Rye went the distance, scattering three hits and striking out 10. Dylan Love had a double for Avon while Jackson Chard and Amatulli each reached base with singles. Max Raha went 0-for-2 and saw his 13-game hitting streak come to an end.
Avon returns to action on Monday night when they host West Hartford at Buckingham Field at 5:45 p.m. Post 201 plays at Newington on Tuesday before taking a few days off for the July 4 holiday.
