The Avon American Legion baseball dropped a 6-3 Zone 1 decision to West Hartford on Monday night.
AVON, July 1 – West Hartford had nine hits and scored four unearned runs thanks to three errors in a 6-3 Zone 1 win over the Avon American Legion baseball team on Monday at Buckingham Field.
West Hartford (9-4) has won four of their last five games. Winning pitcher Luke Fox went five innings on the mound and gave up just four hits. At the plate, Fox was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Daniel Fitzsimmons was 2-for-2 for West Hartford while William Fox was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Avon starting pitcher Jake Coppen gave up eight hits and struck out three on the mound. Post 201 got singles from five different players – Max Raha, Matt Leopold, Miles Borenstein, Emmett Borenstein and Ben Angus.
Avon (4-11, 4-8 Zone 1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Raha, who has at least one hit in 14 of 15 games this year for Post 201, singled to lead off the game and moved to second on a single from Leopold. Raha moved to third base on a double play and gave Avon the early lead scoring on a wild pitch.
West Hartford took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. Luke Fox drove in a run with a two-out single to give West Hartford a 2-1 lead and Post 96 extended the lead when a third run came in due to an error.
Avon cut the lead to one run, 3-2, in the fifth inning. Angus’ single to center field with two outs drove in Emmett Borenstein from second base.
But West Hartford added three more runs in the final two innings to pull away for the victory. Griffin Van Rye’s RBI single in the sixth inning pushed the lead to 4-2. Post 96 won all three games with Avon this summer.
Avon, which has dropped five straight games and six out of the last seven, look for their fifth win of the season on Tuesday night at Newington (4-11, 4-10 Zone 1) beginning at 5:45 p.m.
