Avon Legion comes through with crucial hits to snap five-game losing streak

Avon’s Ben Angus had a double and two RBI Tuesday night as Post 201 beat Newington to snap a five-game losing streak.

NEWINGTON, July 2 – The Avon American Legion baseball team took advantage of their opportunities to snap a five-game losing streak Tuesday night with an 8-2 Zone 1 victory over Newington.

Six hits with two outs in the inning drove in all eight runs for Avon, which had 10 hits and committed just one error. Avon’s starting pitcher Arjun Grover kept Newington off guard, allowing just three hits and striking out three in six innings of work. Grover improved to 2-0 on the mound with the victory.

Avon (5-11, 5-8 Zone 1) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI single from Max Raha and a sacrifice fly from Ben Angus. Both came with the bases loaded.

Post 201 extended their lead to 5-0 in the third inning. Angus had a RBI double with two outs while Tyler Nyberg drove in two runs with his two-out single.

With a pair of runs, Newington (4-12, 4-11 Zone 1) sliced the lead to three runs, 5-2 but Avon added another three runs in the sixth inning. With two out and the bases loaded, Emmett Borenstein had a RBI single while Nick Amatulli had a two-run double.

Raha finished the day by going 3-for-4 with one RBI while Nyberg was 2-for-2 with two RBI. Borenstein was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Avon has a few days off for the July 4 holiday before returning to action on Sunday, July 7 when Post 201 hosts Southern Division leader Southington (9-3) at 5 p.m. at Buckingham Field in Zone 1 action.
