Four Avon High athletes earn All-State honors this spring

AVON – Four Avon High athletes earned All-State honors for their play on the field this past spring – runner Rhiannon Richmond, softball catcher Amanda Hasler and golfers Michael Hanratty and Collin Barrett.

Junior Rhiannon Richmond earned All-State honors by winning the Class MM championship in the 3,200 meters with a win of nearly 12 seconds over Brookfield’s Juliet Brissell.

It was Richmond’s second Class MM title. A year ago, she won a state championship in the 1,600 meters.

Richmond set the school record in the 3,200 meters at the State Open with a time of 10:51.75 and finished third. She was eighth at the New England championships.

Avon catcher Amanda Hasler hit 11 home runs this season and was named All-State as a freshman.

Hasler was part of a freshman duo that helped get the Avon High softball program back on the winning track. Hasler and freshman pitcher Jackie Pengel helped the Falcons finish 12-8 and earn their first CIAC tournament bid in since 2001.

Hasler caught Pengel in each game. Hasler also got the job done at the plate with a team-leading 11 home runs. Twice, she had a pair of home runs in a game. Against Innovation in the final regular season game of the season, Hasler hit two home runs including a grand slam. She had seven RBI in the victory.

Hasler had a home run in a 5-2 win over East Lyme in the first round of the Class L tournament. Not only was it Avon’s first-ever win in Class L, it was the first CIAC tournament win for the program since 2000.

Hanratty and Barrett helped the boys golf team win the CCC West title, finish third at the CCC championships and second at the CIAC Division II championship meet.

Hanratty led Avon at the Division II meet with a three-over-par 74, good enough to finish tied for third. Barrett was fourth with a 75. Hanratty won the CCC Tournament in a playoff with Barrett finishing seventh. Hanratty finished fifth at the State Open championships while Barrett was tied for 26th at the New England tournament.
