
Avon’s Jake Coppen went the distance on the mound in the opening game on Monday night’s doubleheader with Southington. Avon won the opener, 5-3.
SOUTHINGTON, July 8 – Pitcher Brendan Kavanagh struck out eight batters and threw a no-hitter as the Southington American Legion baseball team earned a split of Monday’s Zone 1 doubleheader at Fontana Field.
Kavanagh helped Southington (12-5) salvage a split with a 10-0 victory in the second game of the twinbill. In the opener, Avon’s Jake Coppen went the distance, scattering eight hits and fanning two to help Avon earn a 5-3 decision.
Kavanagh was in command in game two while his teammates banged out 10 hits. Sean Crean was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and one RBI for Post 72 while Bryce Worth and Jacob Romano each had doubles.
In game one, Max Raha was 3-for-4 for Avon. He got Avon started in the first inning by leading off the game with a single. After a pair of infield ground balls, Raha was on third base and scored on Emmett Borenstein’s RBI single to give Avon a 1-0 lead.
Tied at 1-1, Avon scored four times in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Raha singled with one out and moved to third base on Matt Leopold’s single. Both scored on Miles Borenstein’s two-run double.
After Emmett Borenstein was hit by a pitch, Miles Borenstein scored on Nick Amatulli’s sacrifice fly. Emmett Borenstein scored the fifth run on a wild pitch.
Avon (6-13, 6-11 Zone 1) returns to action on Wednesday for the first game of a three-game series with Zone 1 rival Winsted (9-11, 9-11 Zone 1). Post 201 travels to Walker Field in Winsted on Wednesday, hosts Winsted on Thursday at Buckingham Field and closes out the series on Friday at Walker Field.
